Tips to Prepare for Your Professional Headshot

headshot photography in Columbus Ohio

If you’ve never had a professional headshot before, you may be a little nervous about the experience. After all, the resulting photo will be used across your social media profiles, professional accounts, or your company’s website, so you’re going to want to look your best.

At Lucidaré Studio we want you to be prepared come appointment time, so we’ve put together a few tips to ensure you’re photo shoot ready and come into your shoot as confident as possible.

Put your best face forward.

In the days leading up to your headshot session, be sure you drink plenty of water. Being properly hydrated isn’t only good for the inside of your body, but for the outside as well. Hydrating your skin will reduce the appearance of fine lines, help diminish dark circles and under eye bags, and help even out your skin tone and reduce flakiness that could be picked up on camera.

On top of being hydrated, take care to get plenty of rest before your shoot. It’s difficult to disguise tiredness in a photo, as it affects your entire demeanor, so set yourself a bedtime and stick to it.

Keep it natural.

If you plan on wearing makeup for your headshot, keep it as natural as possible. Neutral eyes, a staining of lip color, mascara, and a translucent powder are really all you need. The eye makeup will help your eyes stand out, the lip color will add brightness to your face, and the powder will help even out your skin tone and eliminate frustrating shine. Avoid makeup with shimmer or glitter in it, as it won’t translate well on camera.

When it comes to your hair, wear it how you normally would. The primary purpose of headshots is to look like yourself, so if you typically wear your hair curly wear it curly for your shoot.

Avoid doing anything drastic to your hair within two weeks of your appointment. This includes dye jobs and haircuts. On camera, freshly dyed hair can come off unnatural, so it’s best to have at least a week’s worth of washes on dyed hair before your shoot. Giving yourself two weeks before your session will also allow you to get used to new haircuts and settle on a style you truly love, rather than scrambling to find a look that’s just so-so because you didn’t have enough time to experiment.

Be comfortable.

When you’re picking out your outfit for your headshot keep your comfort in mind. If you’re wearing clothing you don’t feel yourself in, that may translate in the image, so if you would never wear a suit jacket and tie it’s not necessary in your headshot. For both men and women, a nice button up shirt is always a great choice, just ensure it fits you properly around the collar. Take care to avoid busy prints on your clothing and keep jewelry simple, that way you don’t distract from the image’s primary focus, your face.

In most headshots you’ll only be visible from the chest up, so you don’t have to worry about what you’re wearing from the waist down. You could come to your shoot in a nice shirt and sweatpants and no one would be the wiser!
