Tips for Successful Attorney Headshots in Columbus, Ohio

If you’re an attorney, you need a headshot. When potential clients are researching your law firm, they’ll be looking for a face to tie to the name, and if they can’t find one they may look elsewhere.

However, getting a headshot taken as an attorney can be a bit challenging. Do you dress like you’re going to court? Do you look relaxed, tough, stoic?

At Lucidaré Studio, we’ve taken a variety of attorney headshots and have gathered some useful tips along the way. Here they are:

Get a good night’s sleep (or at least look like it).

When you’re an attorney you’re often overworked and under-rested. Looking tired in your headshot won’t only result in a less than ideal image, but could send off the impression to potential clients that you won’t be able to handle their case.

Try your best to get a good night’s sleep before the day of your shoot. If a full night’s rest isn’t in the cards, drink plenty of water to help reduce puffy eyes, dab on some concealer to hide dark circles, and drink a cup of coffee to put some pep in your step (and in your expression).

Dress to reflect your personality and field.

If you’re the type of attorney who is never required to dress in a suit and tie or blouse and skirt, don’t feel obligated to do so in your headshot. The key to achieving a natural, realistic image is to be yourself, and if you typically wear a polo and khakis don’t wear an uncomfortable suit the day of your headshot.

Sure, you can dress up a little more than usual (maybe throw on a nice sports jacket), but you should never try to pose as something you’re not. Otherwise, you risk not looking authentic.

Use the appropriate body language.

Even if you’re tough as nails in the courtroom, you shouldn’t look tough as nails in your headshot. When people are searching for an attorney, they’re also searching for a human being to help them with their problems. Look inviting with a pleasant smile, and take care not to cross your arms too severely. Crossing your arms can send off the message that you aren’t approachable, and when you’re in the market for new clients that’s not what you want.

Relax.

Right before your headshot photographer starts snapping your picture, take a moment to relax. Close your eyes, take a deep breath, relax your face, and exhale right before your picture is taken. Taking a moment to calm yourself right before your image is captured will help you look more natural and friendly.
