Our Top Tips for Being Comfortable in Front of the Camera

Most women don’t feel ‘at home’ in front of a camera. Throw in the fact you’re in front of a camera in your underwear and you’ve got a combination that would make even the most outgoing person a little uncomfortable.

But just because the idea of a boudoir shoot makes you a little nervous doesn’t mean you can’t have one. A bedroom photography session is attainable for everyone, no matter how shy you may be. Here’s our top tips on how you can make yourself more comfortable in front of the camera:

Wear what makes you comfortable.

If you would never wear lingerie or pose nude, don’t feel as though you need to do so in your boudoir session. Boudoir photography is about capturing the subject in a sensual, intimate way, and that can be in a nightgown or your significant other’s shirt.

If you dress comfortably you’ll feel more comfortable, and that will translate on camera.

Trust your photographer.

It’s not always possible to have a boudoir session with a photographer you personally know, and the thought of a stranger seeing you in your undergarments may make you uneasy. Rest assured that the photographer you chose is a professional, and that this is their job. Review their portfolio and take comfort in the fact that you’ll look just as beautiful as the other women they’ve shot.

Communicate with your photographer if something makes you uncomfortable or if there is something you’d prefer not to do, and they’ll be sure to accommodate.

Don’t focus on the camera.

It may seem a bit counter intuitive to advise to forget about the camera, but it’s a great way to help yourself relax. Don’t focus on the fact that there is a lens feet away from you capturing your every move. You’re not there for the camera, the camera is there for YOU. Think of the camera as a friend, or better yet as your significant other. Not something to be feared, but something to strut your stuff in front of.

Bring a friend.

Sometimes bringing a friend along with you to your shoot can make you more comfortable. They can help ease your tension, crack some jokes along the way, and help you feel more natural in a setting you aren’t used to.

Be yourself.

The most important tip to bring along with you to a boudoir shoot is to be yourself. You’re not trying to be anything you aren’t already are. If you have a big, bubbling personality let that shine through, and if you’re more reserved and shy don’t feel the need to make a big display. After all, a boudoir shoot is about capturing your natural beauty, and that includes not only your outward appearance, but who you are on the inside.

Being uncomfortable during a boudoir shoot is expected, and most importantly it’s OKAY. We understand stripping down in front of a camera isn’t something most people do every day, so we strive to make you as comfortable as possible. Your boudoir shoot is all about you, and you should feel as comfortable in your own skin as possible.
