On Location or In the Studio: Where’s Best for Headshots in Columbus?

If you’re a business professional (or on your way to being one), you need a headshot. A professional headshot is the icing on the cake when it comes to your social media profiles, business or personal website, and resumé.

But, when it comes to your headshot, where should you have it taken? At Lucidaré Studio, we offer headshot and portrait photography sessions in our studio, on location, or outdoors. To determine which location is best for your needs, we’ve put together the pros and cons of each.

In the Studio

Having your headshot taken in a studio is a great way to get a professional looking image. The background will most likely be neutral, the lighting will be set up nicely and accentuate your features, and you will be the sole focus of the portrait. Your photographer will be comfortable in their studio and have had lots of practice in this space, so you can count on a great image.

If you’re looking for something more unique, a studio shot may not be for you. Studio portraits typically have a colored or textured background, and if that doesn’t suit your tastes you should consider another location.

On Location

Whether it’s in your office, your home, or at your favorite coffee shop, an on-location shoot can add in a nice touch of personalization to your headshot. By depicting a bit of your day-to-day environment in the background of your portrait, you can show viewers not only what you look like, but where you spend your professional time.

The downside to an on-location shoot is that there will be people other than yourself there, unless you work alone. Make sure employees and coworkers are aware you’re having a portrait taken so they can avoid walking into the background or disrupting the image in another way.

If you love natural light or just enjoy the outdoors in general, having your headshot taken outside is a great option. Pick a spot you enjoy spending time in, or pick a location outside of your office building. Vibrant leaves and flowers can add beautiful splashes of color, while buildings can add in a nice texture.

Unfortunately, nature can be unpredictable, and lighting and weather conditions can change quickly. What was sunny and calm an hour ago could quickly turn stormy and windy, so with an outdoor shoot you can be rolling the dice. Be sure you look at the weather forecast the week of your shoot to ensure you aren’t caught by surprise.

Ultimately, you should have your headshot taken wherever you feel most comfortable. If you’re in an environment you feel at ease in, that will reflect in your picture and help put out a relaxed, natural feeling, and contribute to the success of the image.
